EXPERIENCE
See more of the island.
With less pressure
Some guests arrive with a list. Others only know that they want to understand Zanzibar beyond the view from a sunbed. The lodge team can help with both.
Tell us what interests you, who is travelling and how active you want the day to be. We will explain the current options, timing, transport and conditions, then help arrange what suits you.
Travel with context
For Mangrove Lodge, responsible travel in Zanzibar begins with context: who is leading an experience, how a place is approached and whether the activity respects people, wildlife and local conditions. Priority is given to locally led experiences and guidance that helps guests understand more than the route.
Many guests use Mangrove Lodge as the first or final stop in a wider island journey. From Chuini, it is easy to combine Stone Town, spice farms, Masingini Forest, Prison Island, Bawe and nearby sandbanks with a later stay on the north or east coast. The team works directly with trusted drivers, guides and boat captains and will explain routes, timings and costs clearly.…
History and culture
Explore Stone Town with context, begin closer to the lodge in Chuini or encounter the story of Sultan Barghash’s Palace. Prison Island and its museum can also form part of a west-coast day, depending on current opening and transport conditions.
Forest and land
Walk in Masingini Forest, explore Kichwele or visit a spice farm to discover how spices and tropical fruits are grown. Jozani can be arranged as part of a longer journey across the island.
Sea and islands
Boat trips from the lodge’s beach can include Prison Island, Bawe, Nakupenda, Nyange and nearby sandbanks, depending on tides, weather and current partners. Mnemba and other distant trips can be arranged on request, with honest guidance about travel time, crowding and responsible wildlife practice.
Activities closer to home
Closer to the lodge, guests can join cooking, batik, soap or music activities, arrange massage or henna, and ask about a lunch or dinner at Sultan Barghash’s Palace.
Choose together
Experiences change with season, weather, tides and the people currently offering them. The new website will publish only activities Mangrove Lodge actively arranges, with honest information about who leads them, duration, transport, suitability, price and responsible practice.
